Fox Valley Special Recreation Association (FVSRA) collaborates with the St Charles Park District to empower individuals with disabilities to participate in leisure and recreation programs. With the support of the St Charles 708 Mental Health Board, the collaboration between the two organizations is amplified.
When a child with a disability enrolls in the park district program, FVSRA Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) meet with the family for a free assessment to learn more about the child’s specific needs. The CTRS may collaborate with other service providers or therapists for a holistic approach.
The CTRS staff create a participant support plan and coordinate with the Park District staff. This support may include the creation of a behavior plan, staff training, providing adaptive or sensory equipment, or providing a one-on-one companion. All of this is free of charge to the participant.
The participant in the photo had a successful summer due to all the support in place. His mom shared, “We are over the moon with how well Joey has been doing this summer. Thank you, as well, for being so accommodating with his therapy team and open to everyone working together. Such
a difference from years past, and definitely appreciated!”
